Sunday 23rd April is when I take part in my first cycling Sportive. What is a Sportive you may ask, well it’s a mass start (and not cycling carnage apparently) timed distance event. I’ve only entered the 50km (just over 30 miles) event, while the distance is a short training ride in length, event wise it’s something completely new to me. I just hope I don’t fall off!

Penylan hill, the name sounds quaint and pretty, even generating images of gently rolling grassy landscapes with flowers, wooden benches and twisty pathways. Only Penylan hill, North Cardiff is anything but gentle!

On Saturday I braved the Cardiff traffic and Welsh rugby supporters who were out in droves, to take part in my British Cycling Breeze level one ride leadership award. The course was held at the Welsh centre for Sporting Excellence in Sophia gardens, right next door to the Tory conference that was also on at the time. I’m sure we provided plenty of entertainment for the hundreds of security staff involved in the conference event.
